"Not much football played here today..."

"I doubt the manager will be showing his face in public anytime soon."

FIFA 08 --- I hate this game.

Chicago Fire 1 Columbus Crew 0 !!!

The two evenly matched squads battled each other to a scoreless draw after 86 minutes. Then a bit of dazzling midfield play found Wanchope at the top of the crew circle with the ball at his feet! The defense closed in and Hesmer left his line to cut down the angle. But Wanchope dropped the ball off to Blanco who took the angle and drove a long low ball past the over-committed Hesmer. The ball skipped, caromed off the far post and trickled over the goal line to give the Fire the go-ahead goal with only 3 minutes of regulation left to play!!

After that, the Fire's impenetrable defense ran out the clock, giving the Fire the victory, and sweet revenge!

No I'm not dreaming. I got FIFA08 for the WII for Christmas and that was the first game I played!!.

Cool Game! I saved some money and bought 08 at a steep discount, since 09 is for sale. As a result, my Fire squad features Wanchope, Matt Pickens, and Chris Armas.

I may need to take a couple weeks off just to master this game! I mean, of course you can pass and shoot, but you can also put spin on the ball, execute step overs, fake shots/passes, chip shots, lead passes, long balls, and something that is almost, but not quite, a Maradona turn.

To do this with the Wii controls, you have to move the controls through space and manipulate joysticks and buttons (often multiple points simultaneously). The end result is you look a little like an epileptic yogi master with turrets.

But 1-0 vs Columbus was worth it!!

Gotta go to bed now....stayed up until 2am......

One Hundred Twenty Three...

One hundred twenty three more days until the Fire 2009 home opener - but then, who's counting? Oh yeah, we're counting.

Today, the league announced the home openers for all the teams. Chicago plays at Dallas on March 21st, takes a week off, and then comes home to Toyota park to face RBNY and JCO.

Start chillin' the beer...

Farewell to the King

We only had a taste of what Steven King was capable of (2 regular season goals and just a few more appearances off the bench). But we'll have to watch him develop on TV from now on; King was left unprotected by the Fire and the Seattle Sounders selected him in the expansion draft.

The Fire left Brandon Prideux (sp), Woolard, Frankowski, Heron, Carr, Marmol, Banner and (wait for it) Marco Papa all unprotected (and several others of course). Probably the only surprises on that list were Prideux (still sp) and, maybe Papa. Hamlet chose to protect Desan Robinson instead and leave the veteran defender open. In the midfield, Pause was protected instead of the young sensation Papa.

Hamlet also protected Rolfe, Conde, Sumare, Blanco, McBride, Thorington (made an international appearance the other day), Mapp, Gonzo, and Bushy as well. No surprises there.

Farewell King and good Luck.

Ticket Prices are Going.....Down?!

Yes, apparently the Chicago Fire have decided to take advantage of three very successful seasons at Toyota Park by NOT sticking it to the season ticket holders. That's right, no ticket price increase - no seat licensing schemes - in short, nothing we have all come to expect from local teams (who shall remain unnamed, but who's Greek name is Ursus).

In fact, the team claims to have recently completed a detailed examination of customers and the market, and concluded they could reward season ticket holders by reducing the ticket prices in the circle of fire section - which is where we sit in section 108.

Long story short, this year we paid $1680 for our tickets. In 2009, the fire apparently will ask for $1400.

And here I thought I couldn't get any more pleased with our decision to become Fire season ticket holders...

Well, I'm supposed to be working and getting ready to fly. Later everyone. I'll be in touch soon regarding tickets for next year so start thinking about what you want.

No Joy in Fireville...

The outlook wasn't brilliant for the Fire Eleven that day;
The score stood two to one, with but one minute more to play,
And then when Prideaux subbed out first, and Gonzo did the same,
A sickly silence fell upon the Supporters at the game.

A straggling few got up to go in deep despair. The rest
Clung to that hope which springs eternal in the human breast;
They thought, if only Cuantemo could get but a whack, that’s all-
We'd put up even money, now, if Temo had the ball.

But Thorington took a shot, and so did old McBride,
And the former was a lofter and the latter to the side;
So upon that stricken multitude there sat a deathly pall,
For there seemed but little chance of Temo's getting to the ball.

But the ref did call a foul, to the wonderment of all,
And Mapp, the much despised, stood to again restart the ball;
And when the dust had lifted, and the bench saw what had occurred,
Dennis Hamlet raised the call to use a sub, this time his third.

Then from 5,000 throats and more there rose a lusty yell;
It rumbled through the valley, it rattled in the dell;
It knocked upon the mountain and recoiled up every ditch,
For Papa, Marco Papa, was advancing to the pitch.

There was ease in Marco's manner as he stepped into his place;
There was pride in Marco's bearing and a smile on Marco's face.
And when, responding to the cheers, he raised his thumb and winked,
Then Marco took his place with his teammates on the brink.

Ten thousand eyes were on them as they faced up to the Crew;
Five million more were watching thanks to ESPN two.
Then while Lexi Lalas babbled on and Harkes tried to be hip,
Defiance gleamed in Blanco’s eye, a sneer curled Conde's lip.

And now the leather-covered sphere came hurtling through the air,
And Blanco stood a-watching it in haughty grandeur there.
Close by the sturdy striker the ball unheeded sped-
Past the scrambling defense went and onto McBride’s head!

From the benches, red with people, there went up a muffled roar,
Like the beating of the storm-waves on a stern and distant shore.
"Kill it! Kill the ball!" shouted someone on the stand;
And it's likely he'd a-killed it had the ref not raised his hand.

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright;
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light,
And somewhere men are laughing, and somewhere children shout;
But there is no joy in Fireville— regulation time had run out.

Needs and Update, but Still A Good Watch for Today...

Depending on your personal aesthetics, you might find this a bit, umm, macho. But with the playoffs here and the season riding on tomorrows game, this sort of thing is just what's needed to get the blood flowing as we all prepare to cheer our Fire on to victory and the MLS CUP!

Fire Watch Party...

Hey, it turns out that Quigley's Irish Pub in Naperville is an official Fire Bar! I had no idea. In case you don't know, Quigley's is the bar on Jefferson directly across the street from the middle/upper deck entrance to the Jefferson Street/Chicago Street Parking Garage. So, its on the north side of Jefferson, just east of Washington, which is one block south of the North Central College campus.

Looks like we are going to need to plan a watch party or two next year! Fire go Bragh!

Book Ends....

4:00 pm - Tania and I leave from home to start our drive to Toyota Park and the second leg meeting between the beloved Fire and the hated Revolution. And there, like a sign from God, is a perfect rainbow in the sky, stretching from one horizon all the way to the other.

To paraphrase Genesis, "And God did set his bow in the cloud as a token of his covenant, that never again should New England prevail over the Fire in the playoffs..."

Yes, when we saw that sign, we knew that our curse was broken, and the Fire would defeat the Revs, finally.

So on to the game, and what a game. Those who have been paying attention to this blog will remember our posting for the very first game of the 2008 season (and the film that went with it). Cold, rainy, and Fire 3 - New England 0.

Well, here is the film from the Final home game of 2008....

Look familiar? Yes, a perfect bookend to the season! Fire start off with Revs 3-0 (cold and raining Thursday) and end with Revs 3-0 (cold and raining Thursday). Alas, yes, that was the final home game of 2008, because on Saturday the Crew advanced to the finals, which means we will need to Travel to Columbus for the next game and then on to California for the MLS Cup.

But what a game it was. The crowd was loud and fired up. The beer was cold. My seat was wet. What more could you ask for? GOALS! Rolfe (we're not worthy!), Conde (striking home a header with his sloping Neanderthal forehead!) and Gonzo (he even had the dramatic sense to foreshadow his goal in the first half!)!! If you missed it, watch again....

Yes, believe it! We're going all the way to the MLS Cup and we're bringing it home!!

We're on a mission from God.

Who's Next?!

Wondering if there's a chance we might see another playoff game yet this year? Well, here's the poop.

After the Fire crush New England Thursday (positive visualization), we do indeed have a chance for hosting another game at Toyota park.

The winner of the NE/Chicago series will go up against the winner of the Columbus/KC series. Since our record is better than KC's record, if KC beats the Crew Saturday, we (having destroyed NE in a game that will become legend) will play KC at Toyota Park.

Tickets will go onsale Monday.

Anyone Interested?

Best Goals of the 2008 Season!

Chris Rolfe provided the link to this video. I notice that Chad Barret is left completely out of the mix and none of the goals are vs. New England. But, still, pretty good selection

If your still hankering for some strikes v. New England, don't forget the earlier post on this site from the route at the start of the season!

Enjoy and GO FIRE!!

Salary Capped Strapped Take the Fantasy Title!!

The season has ended and the final standings are in. Congratulations to Jason and "Salary Cap Strapped" for taking first place in the 2008 season! Jason took the lead 10 weeks ago and refused to be unseated - spirited challages from Kris, John, and, finally, Jim not withstanding.

Here are the final standings....

Salary Cap Strapped 462 points, Jason
Red Shield F.C. 438 points, Jim
O'learys Cow 403 points, Kris
Brandon's Bombers 401 points , Brandon McAndrew
da_futbol_fanz 390 points , John
Texas Tornados FC 389 points , Tania
Texas Raiders 371 points , Caelye McAndrew
Green Machine 343 points , Dwayn Shields
Blue star 293 points , Julio
Justins Team 194 points , Justin Jamrowski

Amazingly enough, Justin only joined a couple weeks ago and managed to rack up half the score of the point leaders. Lucky he wasn't in the competition from the beginning!

Hopefully, everyone had fun and found the competition provided a reason to watch games and cheer for teams all around the MLS.

This years prize for first place is not exactly stellar (a Fire key chain, pencils, pens, and window decals for the car), but hey, it beats a poke in the eye! Next year I'll hit the fire up for some autographed stuff and we'll really have a reason to beat Jason (like we need a reason).

Thanks again for playing, everyone.

Planning for the Playoff Tailgate

Playoff Tailgate is upon us. Time to decide what to cook (see the poll in the side bar). If this game could be anymore of a nail-biter, I don't know how. Hopefully, there's some more soccer played in this game than what we saw at Gillette Stadium.

Sierra Mist Goal of the Year

Voting starts November 13th. Rolfe and Blanco are both nominated for the honor this year. Check out the goals here and do your voting. As always, VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN...

Why Can't We Have Soccer Commercials Like This?

Ok - why can't we have soccer commercials like this? Ummm...in english....

Serpents Soccer Fire Outing 2008

Ok, I was going through video and discovered I had a video of the Serpents 2008 Outing. For those who don't know (most everyone), the Serpents are my daughters spring 2008 team. We took the team to the Houston Dynamo game in May. The girls went out on the field with the players during introductions and Tania took some good video.

Since we are now here at the playoffs after a successful season (GO FIRE!) I thought I would post this to remind us all where we started from. Enjoy!

Section Eight 2008 Season Promotional Video

I found this by accident (it popped up on the film strip on the side of the Section 108 blog which I have as the home page on my work browser...busted)

Had to share in light of the upcomming Columbus, Dallas, and Red Bull games.

Osario Outdoes Himself

Yes, I'm still smarting from Juan Carlos's defection. He left us high and dry - tried to steal Marmol (ok, I know, we've never seen Marmol play a game so who gives a damn), then he convinced our poor unfrozen caveman soccer player Wilman Conde to go over to the dark side as well!

Well, Conde has paid his penance for his indiscretion and is now back in the good graces of Chicago fans. But JCO has stolen from Conde his most notable calling card.

Yes, I'm here to say that Wilman Conde is no longer the most "prototype" human playing in the league. JCO has gone back to South America (primitive Amazon Jungles, don't you know) and pulled forth another missing link.

I know I've besmirched Wilman and called him a Neanderthal, when clearly anyone can see he's a Cromagnon. But that matters not a bit, because JCO has managed to find a still living (and soccer playing) member of Australopithecus Africanus. Behold Jorge Rojas...

This picture isn't very good. But I have gotten my hands on a high res version and you can clearly see the nick marks where JCO has shaved off Jorge's uni-brow and forehead hair.

I'm writing a letter to US Immigration. No more unfrozen caveman soccer player visa's for JCO!!

Chris Rolfe Needs Your Vote!

Once again Rolfie is up for the Sierra Mist Goal of the Week! Competition is tuff this week, with a stinger by Ante Razov in the vote and (hiss) that goal by Abdus Ibrahim (sorry about the spelling) against the Fire.

Use your vote to tip the scales toward rightousness and justice and away from Ante goal! (sorry about the lame pun)

I Have No Finger Nails Left

Jeez. That was an amazing game! I am very happy that I signed up for Fox Soccer Channel on Saturday so that Kris and I could watch the game after cutting and splitting fire wood all day. Now the Question is, will the Rolph goal or the Thorington goal end up at the Sierra Goal of the Week? We'll have to wait 'till Monday to start voting!!!

Boy it's good to have the Fire back on the winning side...and dominating offense.

That injury to Segares looks nasty. Anybody heard how long he's gonna be out?

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Never Enough!

I don't know about you, but I can't get enough of Chicago stomping the Revs! Sure, I'm marrooned in Real Salt Lake country, but just because I'm starved for entertainment, doesn't make this any less...well.....entertaining!

Enjoy!

Stinger!

Chris Rolfe is back! And he's won the Goal of the Week award for his 1st half stinger against the Revs last week. Check it out. You can also see the Beckham Seeing Eye Goals (personally, I'm not sure Rolfie's goal was better than the Beckham free kick...)

Survey Says....

Given the choice between chili, brats, beef, or fajitas - and knowing full well that the voters had chosen Brats - Tania and Holly have stolen the election and gone with Pork Steaks or Ka-bobs!!

What!!

Where were Ka-bobs or Pork Steaks on the poll?! I had carefully crafted the food selection so as not to offend anyone (Kris is Kosher, John won't eat things with more appendages than him, and Tania has to have stuff that can be doused with cayenne pepper or Tabasco sauce). Given this tricky dietary law, how can you amateurs step in and think KA-bobs!?!

Well, that's it. If you think you soooo smart, just go ahead and play iron chef! I'm just going to be sitting and drinking my beer....you ARE getting BEER, right John?

Competition Heats Up - Big Time!

Oh Yes, the competition is definitely heating up in the Fantasy League. In a brilliant bit of work, Tania, in two weeks, has crawled out of the basement and vaulted straight to the top of the heap! What are her secrets? Even I don't know. But she does keep a yellow legal pad full of strange color coded symbols and glyphs. Either coded player picks or witch craft...perhaps a bit of both.

Well, week 3 did not treat me well. Nothing tragic. I picked up a few points but nothing spectacular. So far, I've resisted making any trades, but the time may be here. I'll let you know next week if I decide to go for it!

Finally, I'll let you know what Brandon has been doing, since he's been doing pretty good too. More on that later...

Revenge is a Dish Best Served Cold...and Wet

Ahh, how sweet it was to see our Fire steamroll the hated Revs. Yes, they were a depleted team, and the victims of an early red card. But I think that's just Karma. Or bad voodoo.

Regardless, it was wet, cold, and glorious! Nobody could speak after the game (horse from screaming and chanting). Oh, by the way, Kris wanted everyone to know he's the man to beat when it comes to demonstrating for the team. During the off season, he's apparently learned every single Section 8 chant. Although the words "Doh-doh-doh" seem to come up a lot, but none of us know any better so until proven otherwise, he's the man.

The only blemish on the game came from a few fools in the Section 8 area that thought it would be a good idea to bomb Matt Reis with soda bottles and other crap. The fire should install a wiener cam over there so they can eject/revoke season tickets from the ding-bats who never learned sportsmanship! Also, Section 8 have decided to use a couple of their "blue" chants again this year. My opinion, bad for the sport - bad for the club. If parents want to instruct their kids on four letter words, they can take them to a Bears game. Word of advise to Section 8 - keep it clean - keep it fair. You can either be a point of pride for the club (which I think Section 8 is 99.99% of the time) or an embarrassment on National TV. Choose wisely.

Due to the inclement weather, we cut the tailgate a bit short. But Tania did great with chili and chocolate chip pan cookies, and we did manage to fly the Flags (half staff) for about an hour before the rain made us pack-up. Here's a video take just before we went into the game (umm...we had a few refreshments prior to filming...).

Post game, the Fire put on a great fireworks show. They launched them from just outside the practice field. Since we parked in our usual spot, we were subjected to an intense salvo of incoming mortars and rockets. Intense.

Well, that's it. Next attended game vs. Colorado Rapids. Look in the side bar of the blog for a poll - what do you want to cook for the Rapids Tailgate Party?!?

GO FIRE!!

No Explanations, Just Beginners Good and Bad Luck

My recent splurge in points is a result of taking too much time to decide on my roster and luck. My kids talked me into taking Blanco and his 300 salary at the last moment while some dude on some website convinced me to take the "cheap" defenders that I started. I initially started out dispersing the wealth evenly among my roster which lacked the starpower that generally accumulates big points for an individual. Then I decided to star stud my roster with the focus on scoring and less on defense (dont teach the kids this philosophy) and that worked OK for one week. Gomez, Galindo and Blanco really did a good job for me but I will need to do some major defensive adjustments to stay afloat. I received most of my points from the pretty boys but I would prefer a more even distribution of points which means transactions (and those darn fees) for defense.
Jim's team did a great job but of course he had to make a deal with the devil (NER) to get his points. I cant be too harsh about that because I bought Twellman, his 274 salary and his 100 transfer fee to find out he is out for at least six weeks. Ouch! I could trade his Cadillac salary for a Pinto priced player but once that transaction goes through I will have a Pinto player that cost me a Caddy. Back to the ole drawing board.

Lots of deals are available at the MLS Online Store. In particular, last years jerseys are all at reduced prices (especially training jerseys). Add to that the fact that they are now doing free shipping, and its just as good as going to the local soccer shop. Check it out.

Fantasy League Kickoff Weekend Yields a Big Lead for "The Jammer"

So Week 1 of the MLS season is over and we have results for our first week of Fantasy Soccer competition: Congratulations to Jason "The Jammer" Jamrowski for jumping out to a quick lead with 25 points! This is good enough to rank as 57th overall nation wide. Well done! Perhaps we can get The Jammer to post and tell us his secret strategy for week one.

It wasn't all roses for the rest of the league, however. Most teams faired poorly in week one, with a couple of upsets and unexpectedly lopsided games wrecking havoc on many teams and managers. In particular, a disastrous showing by L.A., D.C. and Houston cost many of our Fantasy teams points.

For myself, I took a bit of a gamble and bet that the Revs would come out for blood and revenge against a Houston team tired from multiple pre-season competitions. The Revs came through for me and the three players from NE that I had on the field earned big points in that route (including Adam Cristman who scored one). I had benched all my Houston players except for DeRosario. I thought he would still manage a goal. Bad move - DeRosario cost me 4 points when he failed to produce on the field. Scoring for my squad, I had Cristman (NE), Blanco (CHI) and Galindo (CHV). Blanco and Larenowitz (NE) earned me some points in the midfield and Heaps (NE) and Hejduk (CMB) got me a few more on defense.

So, that's the blow by blow for Red Shield FC in week one. I hope my luck holds!!

Remember, the deadline for changes this week is 6:30pm Thursday.

The Fire open this week with their home opener vs the Revs (I will not be playing my three Revs this week!). National Broadcast on ESPN2.

Good Luck Everyone! If you get the chance, post and let us know what strategies worked or didn't work for you this week.

Awesome Fire "Tickets"

Well, the camera is all charged up and the photo of the incredible Fire gift "ticket" is ready to be viewed. They were all sold out when I went to buy one for Jim's Birthday. I guess I now know why they were all out . . . well worth the wait!

Becks on 3600 Secs...

Beckham on 60 Minutes

Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder David Beckham will appear on 60 Minutes on Sunday, March 23 at 6 p.m. CT. He talks to CNN's Anderson Cooper about his career and demonstrates how he bends a soccer ball around or over his opponents.
Just for your amazement, I've scoped out a Becks goal collection from You Tube and stuck it below. Watch if you dare, but it may make you feel inadequate....

Awesome! Truly Awesome!

Yes, the season tickets arrived today, and, as advertised, the package included four truly awesome surprises to be used as the tickets for the home opener vs. the Revs.

Oh, yes! Awesome is the word!

To show you just how awesome, Tania and I took pictures. Truly awesome pictures!

Unfortunately, the battery on the camera ran out before we could upload them. But let me assure you, they are truly awesome pictures that do justice the the truly awesome surprise sent by the Fire.

Don't worry. The camera battery is charging even now! And when its fully charged, I will be uploading, to this very sight, the truly awesome pictures of the truly awesome surprises-that-are-also-tickets!

Bob Dylan, Eat Your Heart Out...

So I'm building on my "Hate the Red Bulls and JCO" theme - plus, I've decided if Section Eight won't publish the words to their chants, then the only way to figure out what their saying is to convince them to use one I wrote! With that in mind, I've been trying to come up with chants for when JCO comes to town. So far, this is what I've got...

(to the tune of the OLE', OLE', OLE', OLE' chant)

O-SAR, O-SAR, O-SARIO
Were'd you go
With all our dough?

[repeat ad infinitum]

Ok. No Grammy there. How about this?

Hey Hey Jack
We had a Contract!
We want our money back!
Or we will have you whacked!

Hey Hey Chuck
Your such a lucky duck
We hope you made a buck
Cuz now the Red Bulls Suck!

Oooookay. I'm going to need to keep working on this, I admit it. But cut me some slack. I mean, this is at least on par with "Fire, Fire, Fire-Fire-Fire. Nah-nah-nah-nah. Nah-nah-nah-nah. Nah-nah-nah-na na na na." At least, there's more actual....words in mine!

Superliga Teams Announced

For those interested, I've added a news feed for SuperLiga to the side bar. Yesterday the teams for this year were finally announced. From the MLS, its Chivas USA, DC United, Houston, and the Hated Revs.

The problem with this tournament, last year, anyway, was that every single game was televised ONLY on Telefutura. First - I don't get Telefutura, Second - no spreken ze doytch, Third....did I mention I don't get Telefutura?

Hopefully, this year the games get picked up by ESPN or Fox. I'll be watching the news to find out.

If you're interested, one of the news articles has the game schedule.

MLSnet.com News Story - Fire and My50 Chicago partner for 18 games

Lifted from www.MLSnet.com and the Chicago Fire site.

Fire and My50 Chicago partner for 18 games
March 10th, 2008
/ Chicago Fire Media Relations

Chicago Fire President and General Manager John Guppy announced today the club has partnered with My50 Chicago WPWR-TV to televise a record 18 games over the air during the 2008 season and a new broadcast team for the telecasts.

(see the rest of the story - including the televised game schedule)

Looks like that subscription to Fox Soccer Net might not be necessary after all.............

Need Access?

Do you need access to post to this blog? Do you need access to the Section One Oh Eight schedule? Or, do you want access to the seating spread sheet that shows who will be at which games?

Just ask and you shall receive access to the documents you need. First, however, you need to set up a Google account. Once you have a Google account, email me with your user name (usually your email address) and I'll set you up with the access you need.

We certainly want everyone to be able to post blogs and photos to this site, and to be able to see who is coming to the games so they can coordinate tail-gates. Don't worry. Access to sensitive information will be limited only to those in our group.

Use the site - stay connected - share - enjoy the games!

Is Juan Carlos Osario the Boogy Man?

JCO is Chicago's new arch nemesis, if you believe all you read in the fan blogs. As of today, JCO is responsible for (in no particular order)....
  • His own defection (feel the knife back there?)
  • The attempted defection of, formerly, beloved attacking defender Wilman Conde. A fellow Colombian.
  • The retirement of Wanchope (ok, its not all bad)
  • The injury of Fire discovery Lider Marmol (Paraguay), who is apparently faking a hammy pull so that the Fire will relinquish their discovery claim and allow him to take up with JCO at the Red Bull.
  • And last, but not least, a disturbing shortage of office supplies at Toyota Park.

Coincidences? I think not! And this couldn't happen at a better time - after all, our rivalry with Dallas F.C. has cooled since they dropped the "Burn" moniker. Sure, we have our grudge with the Revs, but we need another good rival and Columbus just hasn't been there for us the past few seasons.

Enter the Red Bull and JCO.

Everyone suspects the Red Bull of pulling some shifty accounting to manage their salary cap. Now they have "Moriarty" at the helm. Could you ask for a better bad guy foil for our Fire? Oh yes - vengeance will be ours...

The Original Houston Dynamo...

The California crunch really is the result of not enough power-generating plants and then not enough power to power the power of generating plants.

Section 8 Wants You!

The Section 8 supporter group (not to be confused with the Section (One Oh!) Eight supporter group) has sent around a questionnaire looking for your feedback. Follow this link to the questionnaire. It's short and sweet and you could win a lovely Best Buy jersey! (did I mention short?)

Team Transactions!!!!

As of March 4th, the Fire have Drafted Defender Brandon Prideaux in MLS Waiver Draft. He was previously with the KC Wizards, D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids. He was waived by Colorado and picked up by the Fire. It appears he has played alot and well, but was hurt in 2006. And he holds a record for the most matches played without scoring (eight years)!

The Fire also waived Midfielder Tim Conway, Defender Jeff Curtin (the other one), Midfielder Floyd Franks, Defender Jordan Russolillo (who?), Defender Osei Telesford.

It looks like there could still be some trading before opening day, but if they continue to thin out the defense, they won't be able to do without Conde!

Watching the Games on TV

John and I were talking about the best way to watch the games (the ones we aren't attending, of course). Basically, we were wondering if it was a better deal to pay $10-$12 dollars per month for Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) and the regional Fox Sports Channels for the 7 month season, or pay for the Direct Kick package offered on most cable networks.

First question - does anyone but Direct TV offer Direct Kick? Answer - Yes. Comcast does offer Direct Kick, as does Dish Network and other providers. I think Comcast is the big cable provider around here, so that should be covered.

How many games will FSC carry? Answer - 30 games. Only two of which will be Fire away games. Three are Fire home games, but only one (the Red Bull Game on Sept. 6) is one we are not attending.

How many games will Direct Kick carry? 100+ a few playoff games. Four are Fire away games and one is a Fire home game we will not be attending.

What does DK cost? Don't know. The price for this season, as far as I can tell, has not been announced. But it looks like $79 is the likely price.

Also of note is that five Fire away games will be nationally broadcast on ESPN2 and HDNet. Personally, I love the HDNet games and recommend to anyone they pick up that channel if they can. Marcello Balboa is the color commentator, and he blows the ESPN crew away (except when Tommy Smyth (the Irish guy) is on and threatening to punch Eric Wynalda).

(See Balboa's Amazing MLS Goal of the Year (Century))

So, what's MY conclusion? Direct Kick obviously gives you a ton more games - but who the heck can watch 100 games? Even I'm not that big a fanatic! And it doesn't give very good coverage of Fire away games. (Actually, Telefutura seems to be the best for that) Also, when the MLS isn't on, you get nothing with Direct Kick. FSC on the other hand has soccer stuff 24/7. (I know this because it was in the hotel in Vegas). They've got soccer news, talk shows, updates on premier leagues, world cup qualifying from every country, more talk shows with unruly British soccer hooligans, and not a moment of "Beckham Cam" to be found (unless their taking a moment out to make fun of ESPN). Plus, if you subscribe for only the 7 months of the season, it costs about the same.

So, my recommendation (what I would do with my money) would be to subscribe to FSC.

Fantasy League Open for Business!

I've started a fantasy soccer division for Section One Oh Eight members in the Major Fantasy League Soccer (MFLS). There is also an official fantasy league run by the MLS and Fox Soccer. I joined this one, however, for no particular reason other than this one was up and running and the Fox league looked like it might not open until a few days before the first game. Since we're all pretty busy, I didn't think that short enrollment time would work out for us.

Anyway, here are the facts. If you want to participate, go to the MFLS website and create a team. You don't have to worry about which players you pick; you'll have plenty of time to change them around before the start of the season.

Once you have a team, you'll need to enroll in our division. Our division name is "Division One Oh Eight". I've set it up as a private division right now. The password to join the division is - you guessed it - "Fire".

EVERY THING IS FREE!

The MFLS rules say we need to have 20 teams in our division by the 3rd game or they will merge us with another division. So please, pass the word and try to find other soccer minded folks to join our division.

I'm looking forward to this. I figure its going to be a good excuse to watch a lot of games! Plus, I've never played "fantasy" anything!

Finally, like I said, everything is free. However, if enough people are interested, we could kick in $10 a piece (only if your interested) and use it to buy a Blanco jersey for the winner. I'm sure I could get it autographed. Think about it. I'll put a poll on this site and you can chime in!

Now, sign up your team - and convince a friend or two to sign up as well!

GO FIRE!

Event Calender Available on Google Calenders

I've put up an event calendar for the season. Right now I've got all the games on there, but I indend to add other items, including a fantasy league, as the season gets going.
